Diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging have become vital in our present-day society where we have a diverse student population. Halloween presents itself as a great opportunity to discuss these concepts with elementary students in an age appropriate way. And since I love a good storytime!, I have the perfect book suggestions for this occasion-Spookley the Square Pumpkin by Joe Troiano. When I was a 2nd grade classroom teacher I just adored reading and teaching with this book.  As an elementary counselor it remained a favorite of mine! This book is an adorable story that can be used as a springboard for so many classroom lessons and activities.

Spookley is different from the other pumpkins in the patch. His square shape makes him stand out. This is an excellent opportunity to teach children to understand that diversity makes the world a beautiful place.  Teachers can have classroom discussions on how people are different in so many ways, and these differences make us unique and special.

Secondly, the story of Spookley can teach the importance of inclusion. Despite his different shape, the other pumpkins in the patch accepted Spookley. They included him in their activities even though of his shape was different.  His shape didn’t make him any less worthy of love and acceptance! Teachers can use this as an opportunity to teach their students the importance of including everyone, regardless of their differences. This can be a great way to teach empathy to children for those who may not look like them.

Lastly, the story of Spookley can teach the importance of belonging. The other pumpkins in the patch treated Spookley as one of their own, and he felt a sense of belonging with them. Teachers can use this as an opportunity to teach their students that everyone needs to feel that they belong somewhere. This feeling of belonging is important in building a supportive classroom community.

Spookley the Square Pumpkin is a delightful book that can be used to teach children valuable lessons about diversity, inclusion, and belonging. To help you wrap up the story and discussion, I created these no prep diversity read alouds and activities that you can teach, and place in centers in your classroom or school counseling activities.

AND, if you’re working through pumpkin themed activities this week and for the rest of fall, check out these fun October activities. Great for center time, morning work, and lunch bunches, you’ll save a ton of time while your students enjoy fun filled fall activities like games, mazes, and puzzles.

As educators, we have a responsibility to teach our students about these concepts in a way that is engaging and fun. Spookley the Square Pumpkin is the perfect book to start those lessons!
